In this fast paced life, stress has become inevitable. Consequently, mental disorders that result from sustained stress are increasingly becoming common. What’s even worse is the fact that these complications are affecting both the old and the young. Studies have shown that most people today are living on the edge. That’s why news programs are always dominated by reports of mass shootings, gruesome murders and other horrifying incidents that are linked to stress.

In order to prevent stress from developing into a serious mental problem, people are advised to seek help from qualified psychiatrists regularly. But with the growing number of mental health clinics and psychiatrists, it’s not easy to find the right one. Therefore, it’s important for people to understand what makes a good psychiatrist.

Here are some of the qualities of a good psychiatrist.

    Good Listener

People struggling with stress and other mental problems tend to think that the world is against them. Therefore they need someone who is really patient with them. The last thing they want is an argument. So, a good psychiatrist should be able to listen to their patient so he can understand what they are going through. Sometimes all a person needs is someone who can listen and show them compassion.

Listening to the patient, even when one doesn’t agree with what they are saying shows that they respect the patient’s fears and emotions. It also allows the psychiatrist to come up with the best strategy to handle the patient and find the right solution to their problem.

    Flexible

Psychological problems are directly related to a person’s emotions and therefore they require different approaches that are personalized to suit each patient’s emotions. For that reason, a good psychiatrist should be flexible enough to try different ways of dealing with a patient. If one approach works for a particular patient, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for another. It is also good for a psychiatrist to consult other psychological specialists when their remedies fail. Asking for help from fellow professionals doesn’t make one less qualified.

    Good Communicator

In this field of psychology, interpersonal skills are a gold mine. A good psychiatrist is one who has the required communications skills to talk a mentally unstable person from committing suicide. A counselor who doesn’t know how to talk to their patients ends up causing more harm than good. While good communication skills can be naturally given, they also can be learned.

    Qualified and Experienced

Since psychiatrists are supposed to deal with people suffering from different kinds of mental problems, they need to learn how to handle these situations professionally. That’s why there are so many schools offering different courses in psychology. Experience is also very important in this field. This is gained through practice. The more cases a psychiatrist deals with, the more experienced they become.

Other than individual psychiatrists, there are also special clinics such as Briarwood Detox that offer different kinds of therapy and counseling services under one roof. The most important thing is to find the right one.
